Amnesty International Thailand

Amnesty International Thailand is a non-governmental organization dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights within Thailand and globally. Established in 1993 and registered in 2003, it operates as one of more than 70 “sections” of the worldwide Amnesty International movement.

Mission and Principles

Amnesty International Thailand’s work is rooted in the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The organization is fiercely independent and impartial, refusing funding from governments and political parties to ensure its objectivity. It is primarily supported by individual donations and its more than 1,000 members across Thailand.

Areas of Focus

The organization’s campaigns and advocacy efforts cover a wide range of human rights issues, including:

  • Freedom of Expression and Civic Space: Advocating for freedom of speech, assembly, and association, and campaigning against the prosecution of peaceful protesters and government critics.
  • Equality and Non-Discrimination: Promoting gender, racial, and intersectional justice; advocating for the rights of women, LGBTI people, and indigenous communities.
  • Justice and Accountability: Working to end the death penalty and torture, and holding those responsible for human rights abuses accountable. The organization also campaigns for justice, truth, and reparations for victims.
  • Refugee and Migrant Rights: Protecting the rights of refugees and migrant workers in Thailand and across Southeast Asia.
  • Human Rights Education: Providing training and educational materials for students, educators, and community leaders to foster a greater understanding of human rights.

Methods of Work

Amnesty International Thailand utilizes a multi-faceted approach to achieve its goals, including:

  • Research and Documentation: Conducting in-depth research to expose human rights violations and using this evidence to inform its advocacy.
  • Public Campaigns and Mobilization: Launching public campaigns, online petitions, and events to raise awareness and mobilize public pressure on governments and corporate actors.
  • Advocacy and Policy Work: Engaging with government agencies, policymakers, and civil society partners to influence legislation and promote policies that align with international human rights standards.
  • Support for Human Rights Defenders: Standing in solidarity with and providing support to individuals and communities facing human rights challenges.
