Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, is an international, independent medical humanitarian organization. Founded in 1971 by a group of French doctors and journalists, its mission is to provide emergency medical assistance to populations affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare.

Core Principles and Operations:

  • Independence: MSF’s ability to act is based on its independent evaluation of medical needs, free from political, economic, or religious influence. The organization is primarily funded by private individual donors, which ensures its autonomy.
  • Impartiality: Aid is provided based solely on need, with a focus on those in the most immediate and serious danger. MSF does not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, or political affiliation.
  • Neutrality: MSF maintains a neutral stance in armed conflicts and does not take sides. Its priority is to provide medical care to all those who need it, regardless of the warring parties.
  • Bearing Witness: While upholding neutrality, MSF is committed to speaking out when it witnesses extreme acts of violence, neglect, or when access to lifesaving care is hindered. This principle is a key part of its mission to raise awareness about the plight of its patients.

MSF operates in over 70 countries and employs a diverse workforce of medical professionals—including doctors, nurses, and surgeons—as well as non-medical staff such as logisticians, administrators, and mental health specialists. They work in challenging environments, often with limited resources, to deliver high-quality medical care in emergency and long-term projects.
