Pearl S. Buck International

The Pearl S. Buck House, a National Historic Landmark, is the picturesque 68-acre estate in Perkasie, Pennsylvania, that served as the home and creative sanctuary of the celebrated author, humanitarian, and Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner, Pearl S. Buck, for 40 years. 🏡

Description & Significance

The estate, also known as Green Hills Farm, features an elegant 1825 stone farmhouse that stands as a testament to 19th-century Pennsylvanian architecture. During her residency from 1933 until her death in 1973, Buck made extensive additions to the original structure, including a two-story fieldstone wing and two personal libraries. These alterations not only modernized the home but also provided the ideal environment for her prolific writing career, where she penned numerous works, including her landmark novels The Patriot and The Child Who Never Grew.

The house and grounds are meticulously preserved with an intact collection of the author’s personal artifacts. Visitors can see the desk where she wrote her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Good Earth, as well as a rich assortment of Pennsylvania country furniture, Chinese art, and other globally sourced items. The estate’s well-manicured gardens and historic buildings, including a barn and a milk house, reflect Buck’s passion for gardening and her desire to create a nurturing environment for her family and the many children she adopted.

Legacy & Mission

Today, the Pearl S. Buck House operates as a museum and cultural center managed by Pearl S. Buck International, a nonprofit organization founded by the author. It serves as a living testament to her enduring legacy of promoting cross-cultural understanding, racial harmony, and human rights. The organization continues her work through intercultural education, humanitarian aid programs, and educational tours and exhibits that explore Buck’s life and her advocacy for global peace and social justice. The site hosts a variety of events, including tours, workshops, and community gatherings, inviting the public to engage with her visionary work and be inspired to continue her mission.
